Your Essay is worth 20% of your overall grade. It is broken into 3 smaller steps, with a 4th final product. As you work through each of the steps you will get closer to the finish line. The Plan...
Work through each of the steps toward producing a finished product. Your first step is to read through these steps to become familiar with the process. The second is to decide on a possible topic. There is a list of suggested thesis ideas - but you need to do some research about them and see if you feel confident about proceeding with one. You can stray from these potential theses but if you have an interest not covered, as long as you check with the teacher and your idea fits within the parameters of the course - something to do with Aboriginal governance, First Nations, Métis or Inuit issues, cultural renewal and so on.

Learning Goal or Purpose
A research proposal provides structure for subsequent research and writing of an essay.
The proposal encourages students to begin working on their research papers early in the course and helps to ensure that the topics chosen are manageable and appropriate.
Guidelines or Success Criteria
Research proposals should consist of several categories of information, including the following:
o proposed title of the essay
o description of the topic and themes to be covered in the essay
o central objectives of the essay
o research question(s)
o explanation of why the topic is important
o preliminary sources that have been/are being consulted (combination of books, texts, journals, articles)
o a tentative thesis may be included in the proposal, but the argument of a paper often takes time to be formulated, based on
the research conducted.
These notes are going to be what you build your essay from. The more detail you inlcude, the more you will have to work with when it comes to writing your paper.
Task 2 Due Wed. April 24th, 2013. Annotated Bibliography. 5% Final Mark

Learning Goal or Purpose
The purpose of writing an annotated bibliography is to learn about and provide an overview of the research that has been published on a particular topic. This can be done as a stand alone assignment, or is often part of the process of conducting research and writing an essay on a given topic.
Guidelines or Success Criteria
Find 10 different sources (books, texts, journal articles, legal documents, legislation) pertaining to your topic.
Cite each using either APA or Chicago (pick one and stick with it) alphabetizing according to the author's last name.
Write a note that includes the following...
a summary of the major ideas or theories connected to your topic
a critique or evaluation that includes the background of the author and who the piece was intended for
a comparison to other works connected to the topic - how is this source similar or different?
how the source will help you to build your evidence or argument(s) in your paper (Do not use personal pronouns)

The learning goal of this task is to ensure that the student is learning how to put together an effective argument regarding their thesis and has a plan for putting together the framework for the essay.
Students need to meet with the teacher before the date above to discuss their progress. This can happen during work periods or during your spare - make an appointment.
Guidelines or Success Criteria
Students need to be able to communicate to the teacher a plan of action, an understanding of the research process and how they plan to put together their paper. Students are encouraged to ask questions and look for support during this stage.
