Thursday June 13th 2013 and Friday June 14th Reading #7
Converted to a Lesson... Nation within a Nation or Nation to Nation?
Learning Goal
One of the goals of the lesson is to ensure that students understand the concepts of nationhood versus sovereignty. Students will look at the idea of nationhood as it pertains to within the borders of Canada and then also outside of those. Additionally, students will critically examine the practicalities or self government, including the pros and potential cons of such.
Minds On
Matching game. Students have a work package, on the front page is a series of pictures, draw connecting lines between the pictures and the level of government that you think looks after this aspect of our society.
Action
Continue through the power point lesson and fill out the work sheet as needed.
We will watch Wab Kinew's response to our question about sovereignty.
Consolidation
We are going to watch a success story based on Westbank First Nations in BC and discuss what students think about how that government works. What did you like about the clip (if anything)? What did you not like (if anything)? Which tier do you think this government most closely compares to?
