Monday February 4th 2013- Welcome to the course!
Today is the first day of the course and we will be looking involved with introductory type activities. I am never sure how far we will get on the first day, so I am going to post the plan for the second day here as well, which we can begin on Monday if we have time.
House Keeping Items
The goal for today is to get to know each other, to learn a little bit about what the course is about and what type of expectations I have regarding assignments, course work and so on. I would also like to get to know the students, as I have not had the chance to work with all of you yet.
Minds On
We are going to start off fairly low key, and I apologize because this may be the third info sheet you have filled out today, but I like to get some basic contact information from you and find out where your interests lie. Getting to Know You sheets.
Action
We will go through a brief Power Point lesson that provides more information about the course.
I also have questions for you about some of the aspects of the course.
The plan at the end of the period is to do a quick "circle"* where we each make one brief comment about the start of the new semester.

- Novel Study? Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden; Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden; Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese
- Independent Study Essay Seminars in May and June?
The plan at the end of the period is to do a quick "circle"* where we each make one brief comment about the start of the new semester.
*The circle is a model used for group interaction in both the symbolic realm (to convey teachings and promote the development of individual and community values) and on the practical level (to use as a structure for discussion and problem solving). Circles are part of the natural order of creation – from the water cycle to the seasons to the cycle of birth and death – and as such, the circle signifies transformation and movement. Aboriginal peoples in North America use the circle to illustrate their worldviews using models such as the medicine wheel, which illustrates the human journey through life and explains relationships between various aspects of creation, both seen and unseen. The circle is infinite and continuous. It is a way of understanding and explaining interrelatedness and interconnectedness (Methot, 2012).

Tuesday February 5th 2013 - What is an Indian?
Learning Goal
The goal for this lesson is to learn about and challenge our preconceived ideas of who or what an "Indian" is . Another goal is to learn about acceptable language for the course. One other goal includes learning about what makes a good summary.
Minds On
Arts and crafts time. We are going to work with the medium of pastels and crayons. Draw what comes to mind when you hear the term "Indian".

2. Read together as a class - The Imaginary Indian article. Let's look at this together and see where the author thinks these images originated.
3. Brainstorm - What makes a good summary?
Consolidation
1. Where did these ideas come from? Are they relevant today? Are they respectful? Do they have positive or negative connotations?
2. Write a 5 sentence summary that captures the key points of either Francis' article or Methot's version, in as thorough and concise a manner as is possible. The summary is due to turnitin.com by February 8th, 2013.

Monday March 4th Wrap Creation to Contact Groups Summary & Royal Commission Stage 1 &2
Learning Goal
The goal of the lesson is to consolidate the information that we have been sharing regarding the various cultural groups across the many regions of Canada from the earliest age possible to the point of early contact. Another goal is to find out about the Report of the Royal Commission, particularly why the report was commissioned and what happened at Oka, how the research was conducted, how the report is structured and why it is connected to the course. The report is broken into four stages; the first one is Precontact, the second is Early Contact. This will be a nice way to wrap up the first unit and to move into the second unit.
Minds On
1) Briefly, what stood out for you about any of the groups we shared information about? (1st part of class)
2) Has anyone ever heard of Oka? If so what have you heard? What year were you born? - Show the part of the PP that shows video footage of the Oka Standoff in 1990.
Action
1) Creation to Contact Regional Groups Summary - Handout. We are going to look at this together, it is up on the smart board and students have a copy. (1st part of class)
We are particularly looking at highlights and summarizing the characteristics of regions and accesses to resources.
2) Power point lesson regarding the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. This report was put together after a 78 day stand off which resulted in the death of a police officer at Oka highlighted the desperate need for the government to get a handle on First Nations and Canadian relations and try to sort out how we have come to be in the situation that they were in at this time in 1990 (seemingly not that long about but it is before students in this class were born).
Students have a work sheet that goes along with this lesson to fill out as we go through the slides.
Consolidation
1) Revisit governance to make sure that there is an understanding regarding how different regions and cultures would have different forms of governance. (1st part of class)
2) Stage 1 is where we have been in the first unit of the course and stage 2 is at the second unit. Look at the over riding questions from the course - handout from first day; and figure out what we have begun to work through so far in the course.

Tuesday March 5th 2013 Characteristics of First Nations
Learning Goal
The goal of this particular lesson is to compare and contrast First Nations world views with current Canadian world views to summarize or finish up our work from Unit 1 where we essentially have looked at the idea that precontact there were a wide range of nations across North America with richly diverse cultures, but that at the core, these groups shared some commonalities. The goal of this lesson is to sum these up by working through a short reading and filling out a comparison chart. There are some questions at the end that consolidate this learning.
Minds On
Let's fill out the left hand side of the chart, which is about Canada today. We will do this together as a class on the smart board.
Action
Take the excerpt and the chart and finish the right hand side of the chart. Work with a partner if you like.
Consolidation
The questions on the flip side.
